What Was Life Like At NAS Tillamook? |
Because the Navy strived to provide a tour of shore duty for
each person returning from combat assignment, many men found the base to be a refreshing place to serve. Aside from the
gently rolling hills, and small towns nearby, life was considered anything but boring.Nearly everyone who served at NAS Tillamook, lived on base. Enlisted men were assigned to one of three bunk houses, while commissioned officers lived on Officer's Row (a series of apartments and houses). Although maintaining the blimp squadron kept the crew busy, there was still time to enjoy the amenities provided at the base. The Recreation Hall was often a popular place to relax, featuring a library, gym, and bowling alley. Located nearby, were tennis courts and a recreation field. If one were more adventurous though, local rivers offered ample fishing, and a day trip to Portland (often called "the big city") never hurt. |
