Commander's Log (NAAS 14A21 - Serial 51)
Monthly Report of Station Activities for War Diary, January 1944

On January 4th, Navy Blimp K-39 was ordered to Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Quillayute for an emergency landing because of exceptionally bad weather off shore. Because of the combination of totally unfavorable weather conditions and an inexperienced crew, particularly the former, the blimp broke away from the ground landing party [after several unsuccesful attempts to land] and crashed [in the trees] approximately one mile north of the station [at 1620].

One crew member suffered serious back injuries and several members of crew and ground landing party suffered minor injuries [from being carried aloft during the earlier landing attempts]. The blimp was a total loss. The salvage crew from Naval Air Station, Tillamook, Oregon, took charge of salvage operations and succeeded in salvaging parts, instruments, and radio gear.
