This photograph was commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, on December 7, 1941, shortly after the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In the background, thick smoke is emanating from pools of burning fuel, ammunition, and ships in the harbor.
