Comments: Hi, I
have grown up in San Diego and only just discovered that there was an auxiliary
blimp airfield from WW II right here in Del Mar. Of course when I went to see
it, construction had only just begun months earlier to restore the site to it's
original condition (coastal lagoon). Everything was gone already, what a
disappointment. I had found recent photos showing one of the blimp landing
circles and numerous concrete foundations and roadways still visible after 65
years!. I can send them on to you if you're interested. I started doing some
research and discovered the base just about an hour north of me I'd always
known as MCAS Tustin used to be NAS Santa Ana, that finally explained the two
huge blimp hangers. That base closed down in 1999 and of course now the city
has decided to tear down one of the hangers (unanimous vote in Feb.) Not sure
about the other hanger. They say it might be five years or so while the Navy
cleans up the site. I'm going to drive up there and see if I can't view the
hangers and take some pictures before they are gone also. I'd be very
interested in any pictures or information on the Navy Auxiliary Field to Santa
Ana at Del Mar, CA. I read there was another auxiliary for Santa Ana located to
the north in Lompoc, CA. Gone now also unfortunately. Great site here, lots of
interesting information. Regards, Dale |

Comments: Native
of Tillamook, born during the construction of the base, Jan. 1943. Would like
to see more pictures of the base while an active Naval Base. This a great site!
Maybe advertising it prominately at the museum would bring more attention to
the site. |

Comments: I have
been looking for a photo of one of the hangers under construction, showing the
"template" they used to assemble the trusses. Someone told me the template was
mounted on several railroad flat cars. I'm writing a brief article on the
railroading aspedct of the construction of the hangers. If you can aim me at a
particular site or reference point, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Herb Kern

Comments:
Through association with the current owner of the Hitchcock site I have been
fortunate to visit many times. I'm amazed at the conservation that has taken
place for these very fragile buildings. At Hitchcock one of the remaining door
pillars is tilted a bit. I was told that one of the owners of the base after it
closed attempted to remove the immense structures by dynamite. After a
substantial amount of explosive was used with only minute movement the endeavor
was abandoned and the four corners remain standing as sentinels in the middle
of nowhere...If anyone has heard similar anecdotes of this I'd love to know
more. These are truly an awesome sight to behold. Jump at any chance you have
to see them. |

Comments: Hi
there. I grew up in Cardington in Bedfordshire. [I am] now the treasurer for
the Airship Heritage Trust, [and] we have gone through many changes over the
years. We now have a brilliant website with Airships Online, and also produce
an excellent journal 3 times a year. Shed 1 at Cardington is in a very bad
state of repair, [and] Shed 2 is in a better condition [which] recently had a
lot of the new Batman film: "Batman Begins" filmed in there. These massive
structures around the world are important to world herritage. All the
best! |
