Comments: I'm
looking for information, seems simple, but I can't find it! Did Naval Air
Stations have numbers? If so, which one is S35D? It's not a squadron number,
got that far... Thanks!
WEBMASTER'S
RESPONSE:
Although Naval Air Stations did not have numbers
per se, airfields and airports were assigned a designation by the Civil
Aeronautics Bureau (precursor to the FAA). NAS Tillamook was assigned S47 for
instance. I suspect that S35D was once an auxiliary airfield at or near the
present Okanogan Legion Airport.
The U.S. Navy did on occasion assign
base designations when the base was used exclusively by the department.
These are easy to recognize however, as they will always begin with the letter
'N', and consist of only three letters. |
