Ordering Textual Documents From The National Archives.

Unlike when ordering photographic reprints, requesting copies of textual documents is a much less complicated matter. This is for a number of reasons:
  • There are only two main archives to deal with.
  • Citation requirements are not as exacting.
  • There are no vendors to contact (in most cases).
If you already have a Control Number, you might not need anything else. It is possible to receive a copy with only limited information, but obviously the more homework you do, the better your results will be. The key things that the National Archives will be interested in to complete your request are:

Record Group   Creating Organization   Series Title   Box Number   Folder Title   Document Title

Simply contact the appropriate Archives Branch, and provide them with as much of this information that you know. They can conduct a search for you if you don't have all of this information. In those cases though, it is extremely important that you at least know the time period and party that created it.
