Research Cost Considerations.

If you've never done research before, then you might be surprised to learn, that research costs can quickly get out of hand. Fees are not always limited to the cost of making a copy. In fact, many organizations (including the National Archives), also assess various fees for services that they may provide.

Although this may be discouraging, there are many ways that you can limit costs, especially if you have a small budget to work with. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
  • Library: This is one of the most useful tools in your arsenal. By gathering general information here (names, dates, events, etc.), you will not have to pay for the same fee based services elsewhere.

  • Museums/Societies: These are great repositories for popular subjects. In most cases, they already have a collection of related material and/or research by other individuals available for little or no cost.

  • Individuals: It might take a little work on your part, but if you can find someone who has already researched your subject matter, they might be willing to share their material for a fraction of the original cost.

  • National Archives: Requesting information from here can be both an expensive and daunting task; however, record extracts and paper copies of photos can often be provided at no cost. This might be all that you need.
